Long-term Dynamics and the Orbital Inclinations of the Classical Kuiper Belt Objects

چکیده
We numerically integrated the orbits of 1458 particles in the region of the classical Kuiper belt (41 AU a 47 AU) to explore the role of dynamical instabilities in sculpting the inclination distribution of the classical Kuiper belt objects (KBOs). We find that the selective removal of low-inclination objects by overlapping secular resonances ( 17 and 18) acts to raise the mean inclination of the surviving population of particles over 4 billion yr of interactions with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, though these long-term dynamical effects do not themselves appear to explain the discovery of KBOs with inclinations near 30 . Our integrations also imply that after 3 billion yr of interaction with the massive planets, high-inclination KBOs more efficiently supply Neptune-encountering objects, the likely progenitors of short-period comets, Centaurs, and scattered KBOs. The secular resonances at low inclinations may indirectly cause this effect by weeding out objects unprotected by mean motion resonances during the first 3 billion yr.

A Collisional Family in the Classical Kuiper Belt
The dynamical evolution of Classical Kuiper Belt Objects (CKBOs) divides into two parts, according to the secular theory of test particle orbits. The first part is a forced oscillation driven by the planets, while the second part is a free oscillation whose amplitude is determined by the initial orbit of the test particle. We extract the free orbital inclinations and free orbital eccentricities...

Our current knowledge of the dynamical structure of the Kuiper Belt is reviewed here. Numerical results on long term orbital evolution and dynamical mechanisms underlying the transport of objects out of the Kuiper Belt are discussed. Scenarios about the origin of the highly non-uniform orbital distribution of Kuiper Belt objects are described, as well as the constraints these provide on the for...
متن کاملThe origin of the Kuiper Belt high–inclination population
I simulate the orbital evolution of the four major planets and a massive primordial planetesimal disk composed of 10 objects, which perturb the planets but not themselves. As Neptune migrates by energy and angular momentum exchange with the planetesimals, a large number of primordial Neptune-scattered objects are formed. These objects may experience secular, Kozai, and mean motion resonances th...

One of the more puzzling aspects of the Kuiper Belt is the high orbital inclinations exhibited by Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs). This swarm of distant comets have apparent inclinations of ∼ 15◦ that to date have defied all simple explanations. Several distinct models have been offered as explanations for the Kuiper Belt’s dynamical excitation: gravitational stirring by protoplanets that may have o...
متن کاملThe Phase Space Structure near Neptune Resonances in the Kuiper Belt
The Solar system beyond Neptune is believed to house a population of small primordial bodies left over from the planet formation process. The region up to heliocentric distance ∼ 50AU (a.k.a. the Kuiper Belt) may be the source of the observed short period comets. In this region, the phase space structure near orbital resonances with Neptune is of special interest for the long term stability of ...
